andrena ~ mining bees

Mining bee walking atop the petals and stamens of an apple blossom

In the early days of spring when the weather is just at the edge, mining bees appear and save the day.  Sometimes big, sometimes very small, they are told apart from other bees by indentations on their face called facial fovea, which give them an endearing look due to their characteristic "eyebrows."
